Consulting WP is a global consulting powerhouse. We began our operations a few decades ago and have grown due to excellent relationships with our clients. We started out small, with just a few people and a small office, but today we have offices in multiple countries with hundreds of people working inside them.

We achieved our success because of how successfully we integrate with our clients. One complaint many people have about consultants is that they can be disruptive. Employees fear outside consultants coming in and destroying the workflow. Our clients face no such issues.

I recently attended a small conference called connected2011. It was in all honesty done well. It didn’t pretend it wasn’t a vehicle for selling mobile solutions, but it did work well as a networking event. As the owner of a start up business, networking is invaluable. It is something that you can’t avoid. And there is now some extra help out there. No longer do you have to sift through web sites, papers, journals or hear about something over a coffee. You can effectively network on the numerous social media platforms, but the one I find most useful at present is Twitter. 

I only heard about the event through a Twitter contact. So, it is a very useful tool to find information, updates, events and what is going on quickly. In this case I would not have heard about it at all if not for the tweet. I would simply have missed it if not for Twitter. So well done the organisers.

Twitter is a very organic tool that flows in and out of your day to day life. I have no doubt that a high percentage of Twitter users never ever meet their followers or those they follow, and this is fine, however as a business networking tool you need to turn it from a faceless system to one that becomes reality. I was sitting in the audience about to listen to one speaker I have been following on Twitter. @tartancat was about to deliver a talk on social media. A lady to my right said something, and we got talking. We both realised we followed @tartancat and the lady then brought out her mobile and asked me what my Twitter name was. So, you don’t ask for a mobile number any more, or even a business card. It’s a quick, ‘what’s your twitter name?’, ‘i’ll follow you’. So, she asked for my Twitter name. I gave it. As she typed, she realised she was already following me. 

‘Oh, you are @daveloudon’ she said. 

‘Yes, that’s me’. 

How weird, I then spotted who she was from her name badge. 

‘Ah, it’s you @nadinepierce’. 

So, it just goes to show that Twitter and the real world can merge.

You get tweet ups, you get events organised through Twitter, but you should not be afraid to simply ask if someone wants to meet to discuss some thing, some business, some like minded hobbies even. It’s a window into networking opportunities, to build business and even to socialise. In fact, at this stage I do not see many limits for the possibilities of Twitter. 

I am therefore wondering if there is one message that stands out. I believe there is. If you are trying to find out something, want to meet some people who share an interest, want to build business, then go to twitter, check it out, set up an account, start tweeting. It’s easy, and will bring you results, whatever your goal.

Be careful though! There are traps. 

1. Don’t tweet something that could come back and haunt you.
2. Be nice. Try not to wind anyone up. It does not look good.
3. Be generous. Help and not just expect to be helped.
4. Don’t tweet when you are drunk.
5. Be careful not to look too desperate. People will switch off if you overdo it. Desperation is not a good trait, and you will loose followers.
6. Size does NOT matter. People get hung up on the amount of followers they have. This is quite simply rubbish. It’s the quality of your followers, not the quantity. What they can do for you, how they can help you and so on. 

The results are clear in my mind at least. And that is the benefits of using Twitter are there to be seized, but you have to think about your strategy and be careful.
